On October 1, 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) officially began operations as the nation’s civilian space
agency. Only ten days later, NASA launched its very first space mission
– the second in a series of three USAF lunar orbiters known as "Project
Able-1" that the fledgling agency had just inherited. Today’s post on
Drew Ex Machina takes a close look at NASA’s first mission that became
known as Pioneer 1 and what we learned from it.
