With the successes in the American and Chinese lunar exploration
programs in recent years, it is easy to forget that the majority of the
early lunar mission attempts were frustrating failures. Today's post on
Drew Ex Machina tells the story of NASA's Ranger 8 lunar impact mission
that was launched 50 years ago today. In addition to providing much
needed images of future Apollo landing sites, it was the first time the
US had managed to launch two successful lunar missions in a row
following five years of failures.
