On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin made one orbit around the Earth in Vostok
to become the first person to fly in space. Although the Vostok program
ended in 1963, its robust and adaptable design was never abandoned.
Today's post on Drew Ex Machina presents a brief history of the numerous
military, scientific and commercial spacecraft series spawned by the
Vostok design which, after more than 800 flights over half a century, is
arguably the most successful recoverable satellite design of the Space Age.
