When the average person hears the term "spy satellite", they typically
thing of huge and very capable payloads orbiting silently overhead. But
the very first operational spy satellite was actually a very modest
payload that would qualify as a microsatellite by today's standards.
Today's post on Drew Ex Machina covers the history of these first ELINT
spy satellites launched over 50 years ago, under the cover of a science
mission called SOLRAD, whose secret mission was to locate and
characterize the air defense radar systems of the Soviet Union and China.
