The KY designation is similar to the TT and PL and other designations
which refers to the vertical probe, sounding rocket and ballistic
missile test articles. Thus the PL-5 was related to the SS-25 and TT-05
refers to N1-L3 etc. Some of the SS-14, were flown from KY and thus
received this kind of designation as did also the SS-3, SS-4, SS-5 and
other tactical missile as well as SAMS but I think that historical
systems appearance can  define pretty much what was what. These
designations would eventually progress to SS or SL designations. In
early years the designations would be reused by new systems once the
older systems moved on to other designations but how long this practice
actually continues is uncertain.

 Does anyone know what the KY-2 missile was?
KY-2 was the US designation for a Soviet missile tracked from Kapustin
Yar from 1964 onwards; according to a declassified document I have
obtained
it had an apogee of about 250 km and a range of 500-900 km, and
launch dates of early flights were:

       1964 Feb 11 F
       1964 Mar 15 S (success)
       1964 Apr  8 S
       1964 Apr 25 F
       1964 Jul 18 S
